Our mission is to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together.
Between July & September 2019, one piece of harmful content was viewed online every second. We partnered with The Global Alliance for Responsible Media to ensure everybody's safety: https://wef.ch/2QTOXKM @ProcterGamble @Facebook @Google @Unilever @wfamarketers #wefimpact #wef20
I was being a little tongue-in-cheek when I wrote about the "@Facebook Election Commission" in 2017: https://sunlightfoundation.com/2017/09/21/why-congress-must-hold-the-facebook-election-commission-accountable-to-its-transparency-commitments/ …but I don't think it's hyperbole in 2020 to say that they have more power over political ads online than the @FEC. https://www.fecmia.com/ https://twitter.com/emilybell/status/1220470998832689153

If Congress debated & marked up a version of the Honest Ads Act – and the @FEC once again had a full quorum – then "We the People" could define how transparency & accountability apply to public discourse online, not tech companies. https://e-pluribusunum.org/2019/09/18/snapchats-political-ad-disclosure-once-again-shows-the-limits-of-self-regulation/amp/

Then, as almost always happens, antivax groups on @Facebook got mad and decided that they had to “educate” the doctor...and also attempt to destroy her reputation with fake Yelp & Google reviews, barrage her contacts in DMs, etc, make creepy lying memes, call with threats, etc.

Flying monkeys engaging in coordinated brigading to harass and silence people is a problem that Facebook has downplayed and avoided handling for years and years. They pay lip service to “better moderation tools” in bad press cycles, but have delivered nothing remotely adequate.

People who have diagrammed this kind of abuse for them have suggested shared block lists, an ability to turn off comments, an option to temporarily (or permanently) block people who are members of the group or likes the Page that put out the call to brigade....there are options.

Instead, ad hoc groups of *volunteers* - in this case, other pediatricians! - took shifts moderating Dr. Baldwin’s social profiles, reporting fake reviews. They deleted and banned ~5000 people (and kept a spreadsheet of the ones on FB).

Other public health figures are considering preemptively using that spreadsheet to block. Doctors are organizing harassment management support groups and counter-actions. It's insane that this is where we are. https://www.latimes.com/local/california/la-me-ln-vaccine-attacks-20190317-story.html

Users who have better things to do, important work to do, wasting hours of their time to manage what platforms won’t...to handle predictable, well-documented, repetitive harassment behavior. It’s embarrassing for FB at this point how bad their user-controlled moderation tools are

As Zuck prattles on in revisionist blog posts about how he intended FB to “Give people a voice”, he consistently misses this point: harassment of this sort *silences* voices. It deters counterspeech to terrible ideas by making the reputational, time, and sanity cost too high...

and that’s why the flying monkeys do it. When it's clear that the cost of producing a cute public health PSA is abuse, death threats, and attempts to tank your livelihood, what 👩‍⚕️ or 👨‍🔬 really wants to bother?

Twitter is rolling out new tools to give users more power to manage their experience by limiting who can reply to tweets. It’s a great step, and while there will probably be some unexpected changes in conversation dynamics, it's a tangible effort to give users more control.

And in Dr. Baldwin’s case, interestingly, the platform with the least amount of harassment has apparently been...TikTok. They have a chance to build user protection features correctly from the getgo. I hope they take it.

This should not be the experience that public health advocates have when they try to do their jobs. https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/2020/01/17/vaccines-tiktok-video-of-cincinnati-doctor-nicole-baldwin-goes-viral/4505330002/
