Macron wants to reward Putin's favorite trick: causing a crisis and then offering to help resolve it. It's mafia extortion and he'll keep doing it as long as it keeps working.
Macron meeting Putin without any conditions or changes in behavior is pure appeasement. Wanting "peace in Ukraine" is a sick joke when Putin could end hostilities in an instant. Russia OUT of Ukraine is all that matters, not another fake ceasefire.
For sanctions to be effective as a deterrent, the target must know they won't be lifted until conditions are met. Putin's cronies are convinced Putin is still the only chance at relief, and Western weakness & unearned concessions are proving them correct.
The fallacy of free world engagement with dictatorships is one reason Putin stayed in power for 20 years, and also why he feels confident in attacking Europe & the US. Why not?
Abandoning principles & the rule of law in the face of impunity is absurd appeasement. If a murderer goes to jail and shows no remorse, do you say he should be released because jail doesn't work?
Putin's Russia was kicked out of the G7 for good cause--invading Ukraine--and long after it should have happened for turning Russia into a dictatorship. Putin is still invading Ukraine and is no less a dictator today.

I agree in general, but as I've written, the difference is that manufacturing can move, and requires a population to participate (unlike fossil fuel export), so there is more potential leverage. https://twitter.com/pieist/status/1163148258853523461
By now it's well-proven that these engagement policies are corrupt and cowardly at worst, naive and misguided at best. Without conditions, dictatorships export corruption along with gas, oil, manufacturing.
What I called "dictatorship substitution" is a vital element of pushing back against hostile regimes. Increased dependence on Russian gas, Saudi oil, etc doesn't liberalize them, it increases their sense of impunity to crack down even harder.
Business as usual with Putin's dictatorship isn't just bad on a moral level. The economic instability Putin & his aggression cause should outweigh any short-term gains if you actually care about national interests not personal gain. https://twitter.com/UmlandAndreas/status/1162668835721400320

Caring about democracy & rights abroad, in China or Saudi or Russia, isn't imperialism or altruism. It makes the free world safer. It also reinforces the importance of these things at home, where democracy is taken for granted--mistakenly, as should be clear by now.
The question isn't just for the supposed leaders of the free world, but for its citizens. Do they, do you, care enough about global human rights to elect leaders who also do? Because your apathy comes home.
I compared the protests in Hong Kong & Russia in the Washington Post five years ago and the logic remains. The free world has a lot of leverage but won't use it--and Xi Jinping & Putin know it. https://www.washingtonpost.com/posteverything/wp/2014/10/03/unfortunately-for-hong-kong-protesters-its-almost-impossible-to-beat-a-savvy-modern-autocracy/
